Anti-rape lingerie for women developed in India

from digitaljournal.com

Three Indian engineers have invented a lingerie that they claim is able to protect women from rape. The anti-rape lingerie is fitted with modules of GPS, GSM and pressure sensors. It is capable of sending alerts to the victim’s parents and police.

Hindustan Times reports that Manisha Mohan, one of the engineers who developed the product called Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE), said: "The lingerie, laced with modules of global positioning system (GPS), global system for mobile communications (GSM) and also pressure sensors, is capable of sending shock waves of 3,800 KV as well as alerts to the girl’s parents and police."

Mohan said: "The shocks can be emitted up to 82 times." She assured that the device is effective and can save women "from situations faced in bus, public places," where they are often hesitant to seek the help of law enforcement agents.

"A person trying to molest a girl will get the shock of his life the moment pressure sensors get activated, and the GPS and GSM modules would send a SMS on emergency number 100, as well as to parents of the girl," Mohan added.

According to Indian Express, Mohan is an engineering student of Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University in Chennai. She developed the prototype of the device with two colleagues, Rimpi Tripathi and Neeladri Basu Pal. The engineers said they are fine-tuning the product for commercial production.

The design won an award at the Gandhian Young Technology Award-2013 event at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad.

Mohan said: "We have got a lot of joint venture offer, but nothing has been worked out yet. I have approached a friend of mine in National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) to help me find the right kind of fabric for the product so that it can be a washable one."

In response to the question what inspired them to develop the product, Mohan said: "After the Delhi gang rape incident, and the rape of a Bangalore BPO worker, I felt women are being tortured… we decided to come up with something innovative which helps women protect themselves…"
